A.1 highlights the compliant use of A.I. in Swiss hospitals
NewsSubproject A.1 has published a technical article that analyses the impact of the Medical Devices Ordinance (MedDO) on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in Swiss hospitals and describes requirements and recommendations.
The specialist article "Effects of the Medical Devices Ordinance on ML solutions in Swiss hospitals" describes the legal, organisational and technical requirements for the compliant use of AI and ML solutions. A representative survey of 79 general hospitals in Switzerland revealed that many stakeholders are insufficiently informed about the new regulations, which leads to uncertainties during implementation. AI has been directly and indirectly present in hospitals for some time. AI is often available for workplace functions in the office area, e.g. in speech recognition software, and sometimes also in personnel and resource optimisation software. In the medical field in particular, the spectrum ranges from data-driven analyses and information support systems to the generation of diagnosis and therapy suggestions for medical staff. A better understanding and targeted training regarding MepV could facilitate the implementation of these technologies. It is also important to take technical and organisational measures to ensure the data security, transparency and clinical validity of AI and ML systems. This should support the digital transformation of the healthcare system and enable future innovations.
